The Advaya Shaale grade school initiative

Promise Centre
is a 25 year old kindergarten community in Bangalore. The school broke away from the traditional methods of teaching language and numbers and incorporated the Waldorf system, making them the first Waldorf Kindergarten community in the State of Karnataka in the year 2005. A fully fledged Waldorf Kindergarten came into being 3 years later.

Prakriti started in the year 2009, as a pure Waldorf kindergarten. The founder worked towards making it a niche kindergarten and provided a one-of-a-kind experience to both children and their parents, in a uniquely designed and constructed space.

In their journey, both kindergartens came across parents and children who greatly enjoyed, benefited from and revered the Waldorf methodology. The need to start a Waldorf grade school was strongly felt and both the schools along with some parents, worked to get the 1st Waldorf Steiner School going, in the South East of Bangalore. By 2010 the school began operations. Bangalore Steiner School currently runs at Sarjapur road with approximately 110 students from grades 1-7.

Advaya ShaaleSoon after, efforts began to start a grade school in the North East of Bangalore to ensure that more children could partake and benefit from the Waldorf Methodology. In the year 2015 the founders of the 2 kindergartens and members of their parent community came forward and began work in earnest. The yearlong efforts have resulted in the launch of Advaya Shaale – A Waldorf Inspired School which will begin in the academic year of 2016-17.

Our Vision

Advaya Shaale is founded on the contemporary interpretation of an Indianised version of Steiner Waldorf philosophy. The school aims to foster in children, an intrinsic love for learning that emphasizes goodness, beauty and truth. The school intends to encourage and nourish the highest expression of Willing, Feeling and Thinking in the children, thus enabling them to emerge as conscientious and Harmonious World Citizens.

Our Mission

Advaya Shaale is a community school that will integrate and apply the principles of Waldorf Education. The parents, teachers and children will work together to create a natural environment that promotes Self Learning by children. The school will focus on imparting education by a balanced engagement of their Hands, Heart and Head, thus laying the foundation for high school education and beyond.

Waldorf Education – A brief Understanding

Developed by Rudolf Steiner in 1919, Waldorf Education is based on an understanding of human development that addresses the needs of the growing child. Only when the child is ready for first grade, is it appropriate to use the powers of understanding for more abstract matters, including writing, reading, and arithmetic. But, to the child, it is not simply the acquisition of knowledge that is important, it is the process too. And this is where the Waldorf teacher comes in….the teacher must meet the inner need of every child for true authority and provide a secure basis for the child to reach out into the world.

The Waldorf teachers strive to transform education into an art that educates the whole child—the Heart and the Hands, as well as the Head. The College of teachers at every Waldorf school believes that the children should not simply be taught to do artistic activities and manual skills, but they should be taught so-called "non-artistic" academic subjects imaginatively and artistically as well.

At a Waldorf school, music, dance, theatre, writing and literature, are not simply subjects to be ingested and tested. They are experienced. Through these experiences, Waldorf students cultivate a lifelong love of learning, as well as the intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual capacities to be individuals, certain of their paths, and to be of service to the world.

There are currently a total of 9 Grade Waldorf Schools across the country. New kindergarten initiatives have blossomed in Chennai, Erode, Udumalpet, Cuddalore, Trivandrum, Delhi, Goa and Jaipur.

Advaya Shaale is an independent, co-educational integrated school. It is a not-for-profit organization. The Advaya Trust is registered with the Government of Karnataka and consists of parent and teacher representatives. There are 3 main groups governing the school: College of Teachers, Parent Group and the School Management Group. Each group has a head who reports into the Trust. The final decision making capability rests with the members of the Trust.

“The joy of the child in and with his environment must be reckoned among the forces that build and mould the physical organs. The child needs people around him with happy looks and manner and, above all, with an honest unaffected love… The child who lives in such an atmosphere of warmth and love and who has around him really good example for his imitation is living in his right element.”

- Rudolf Steiner, Education of the Child
